My favorite band of all time and subsequently my second and third favorite bands are made up of the members from fordirelifesake. When I first heard their four song EP, my mind was blown. I had never heard anything like this before. The intense vocals, guitar work, and drumming it was all so new. I couldn't believe it. Their discography is a completely consistent work of art. Their final album reached more toward the experimental side of music writing as they incorporated string, programming, and electronic elements. They have released one EP, four split EP's and two full length albums three if you count their rerelease of Breathing In Is Only Half The Function. I found out about them from my cousin from Romeo, MI. He burned me their EP. It's all I wanted to listen to during my sophomore year of high school. Over the next few years they released more CD's which I had to struggle to find in Philadelphia, but nonetheless did. As I graduated from high school, University of Michigan was my school of choice. There was two reasons for this: 1. University of Michigan is an awesome school and 2. Fordirelifesake played mostly local shows and maybe I'd get to see them if I lived there. And it finally I got to see them after about five years of following their music. It was a hall show, but unfortunately it wasn't there best live performance my friend Rob J told me. I saw them again at St. Andrews and again the turnout wasn't great, but I was happy that I was able to see them live. During my junior year at Michigan they announced they were breaking up and were to play their last show in November. I had a conflict of interest because it was the same weekend my best friend in Philadelphia was turning twenty one. It was a tough call, but I decided that the likely hood of fordirelifesake playing a reunion show was greater than the chances of my friend turning 21 again. I caught an enormous amount of shit for making this decision. I knew it sucked because I heard their last show was incredible, but it was done. Recently, it was made known to me that they were going to play a benefit show for Drew Podgorski, vocalist of Bottomed Out and Just Ask. Drew had recently suffered from a stroke and a number of bands came together to help him out. I knew I had to go and I made it happen with the help of some of the most awesome people I know. The show was incredible, everything I could have hoped for and more. I was pleasantly surprise when they played Hamgo aka Let's Smoke Priest a Bottomed Out/Just Ask song. They confessed that this would most certainly be there last show because, "They are getting to old for this shit." Its understandable, they've had an incredible run with a huge following in Michigan and Japan. Their music changed my life and I was so happy I got to see them live one last time. I screamed my lungs out and moshed as hard as i could. FDLS [R.I.P.] may your music be found by many more people. Thank you for all of the memories and opening my eyes to all the possibilities that lie within the music I hear. For anyone who appreciates Post Hardcore / Metalcore, this band and their music is one for the books. Get all their CD's and listen on repeat, hopefully you will hear the same spark that I still hear today in their music.
